- Repression; the ego excludes any painful or undesirable thoughts, memores, feelings or impulses from the conscious.
- Projection; individual assigns their own undesirable emotions and characteristics to another individual.
- Reaction Formation; individual expresses the opposite omotion, feeling or impulse than that which cause anxiety.
- Displacement; the energy that is genereted toward a potentially dangerous or inappropriate target is refocused to a safe target.
- Sublimation; this is positive displacement where by the frustruating target is replaced with a positive target.
- Regression; this returns to an ealier stage of development .
- Rationalization; an individual creates a sensible explanation for an illogical.
- Denial; an individual does not aknowledge an event or situation that may be unpleasant or traumatic.
- Identification; person takes on the qualities of another person to reduce the fear and anxiety toward that person.
