FAMILY COUNSELING.

In family counseling, while a problematic member is assisted to resolve an existing problem, the family is also assisted to interact more positively. There are times when individuals have been assisted to resolve their problems only to regress because another family member may be hindering his/her recovery(Brown and Srebalus 1998 in Mwamwenda, 2004).
Some reasons why a family seeks counseling include the the following:
  1. One family member who has been receiving counseling may encourage other family members seek counseling.
  2. In the couurse of counseling, a client may realize that his or her problem affects other members of the family and may therefore invite them to come along.
  3. A person familiar with their problem may refer them to the counselor.
  4. The family members may decide to seek counseling on their own.                                                        In family planning, there are three stages to be followed (Mwamwenda, 2004):                                   (I)The initial stage.
        (II)The middle stage.
         (III)The final/last stage.
